Stop writing status updates

The weekly “just checking in” email is a symptom. If clients could see progress themselves, they would not need to ask.

Count the hours you spend each month telling clients what you have done. For most freelancers it is somewhere between two and six, and none of it is billable.

Why clients ask

Not because they are difficult. Because they have no other way of knowing. From their side, work disappears into a void and reappears as a deliverable. The check-in email is a reasonable response to an information vacuum.

Fill the vacuum once

A client-facing portal replaces the recurring email with a URL. Progress, milestones, the latest update, their invoices. They look when they want reassurance, which is usually more often than they would have emailed and at zero cost to you.

The important detail is that it must not require a login. The moment a client has to remember a password, they email you instead. A single opaque link, and the reassurance is one click away.

What this does to scope

A portal is also where out-of-scope requests get handled properly. When a change request has a page with a cost and an approve button, "quick favour" becomes a decision with a number attached. Most of the time they approve it, and you get paid for work you would otherwise have absorbed.
